A large proportion of patients seen for psychotherapy by psychologists are also receiving psychotropic medication from primary care physicians and/or psychiatrists. Thus, psychologists need to understand basic principles of psychopharmacology for several reasons, including awareness of (a) the impact of these medications on mental symptoms and the psychotherapeutic process, (b) the frequent need to discuss meds with patients and prescribers, and (c) indications for referral of psychotherapy patients to psychiatrists for medications. The lecture will address major diagnostic categories commonly seen in outpatient mental health practice, including major depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, and attention deficit disorder, with common medication regimens and rationales.
